If Everyone Was Wearing Cowpies On Their Heads

Life is a bit like a dance—sometimes we follow the crowd's rhythm, and other times we need to step to our own beat. It's all about finding that delicate balance between conformity and individuality.

As I've grown older, I've noticed something intriguing: we often inherit more from our parents than just their physical traits. We also tend to adopt some of their wisdom, clichés, and quirky sayings. In my case, I've occasionally caught myself parroting my father's words, especially his response to the classic childhood excuse: "But Dad, everyone's doing it!" He'd retort, "Well, if everyone was wearing cowpies on their heads, would you do it?" I used to chuckle at this, but it got me thinking.

Conformity isn't necessarily a bad thing. After all, it can provide a sense of safety and security. When everyone follows the rules of the road while driving, it reduces chaos and accidents. However, blindly following the crowd without critical thinking can lead to less favorable outcomes.

Let's translate this principle into the world of business. When interest rates started rising, many in my profession awaited orders with bated breath, hoping their fax machines would spring to life and spit out some instruction. But fax machines are outdated, and some of the ways we do business may be out of date, too.

In business, it's vital to strike a balance between tradition and innovation. Just because everyone else is doing something doesn't mean it's the right fit for you. Instead, consider what sets you apart and how you can improve results by taking a unique approach. Don't be afraid to break away from the crowd, especially if it means improving your business.
