Dad’s Words of Wisdom

Something I’ve noticed over the years is that, in moments when I least expect it, I open my mouth and my father comes out. Just like each of us does, I picked things up from my dad, and I’ve started saying them to my kids. One of the things I remember him saying when I was idle and lazy was, “Dustin, get your butt in gear.” Not only do I find myself saying this to my kids now that I’m older, but I find I also say it to myself sometimes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was easy to slack off a little bit. Even though many appraisers were experiencing record-breaking business, we all found time to do other things and relax when everything shut down. However, it was important then – and is even more important now – to take the time to work on your business, not just in it. Take the time to ask yourself how things are working, and how they need to change to be even better. You will make more per hour working on your business than you ever will working in your business.

So, as my dad would say, “Get your butt in gear!” We all have excuses. We all find ourselves saying, at some point, “I don’t have the time.” The fact is that we need to make the time to work on our business. Set an appointment with yourself (I do this every Monday at 6 am), and keep that appointment with consistency. Your business will be more successful, and you will find yourself achieving your goals more as you take the time to work on – and not just in – your business.
