Time to Break Out the Saddle!

Let’s talk about ponies. No, not the hairy little animals that run around your yard and play with your kids. This pony is an acronym, spelled POINII. You’ve heard me use the phrase, “On It, Not In It,” a lot. I use it a lot when I talk to people about their businesses. This is the idea that we need to spend time working on our businesses – setting goals, getting a big picture of where we’re at and where we want to be, etc – instead of just in our business. The acronym I often use is OINII (On It, Not In It).  POINII is very similar, but it brings in a more specific element. POINII stands for personal on it not in it. Hat tip to Tim Graham for this one.

We’ve talked before about the benefits of taking time to work on your business, not just in it. But this is just as important to do in our personal lives, and has the potential to have an even greater impact on our lives than just working on our business. After all, when you’ve achieved your business goals and have more free time, what will you be doing with that free time? POINII requires that we each take the time to have a personal inventory; to take a look at our lives and decide who we want to be. It may include your health, your relationships, skills you want to acquire, or attributes you want to develop. Be specific, just as you would be in your business-related “On it, not in it” time.

Let’s all take some time to turn off the phone, ignore the internet, and really think about what we want our lives and ourselves to look like in the coming year. Break out the saddle (figuratively), and don’t ignore your POINII time! It is this personal inventory and goal setting that will make all the difference for you and your life.
