The Importance of Accountability

I’ve set plenty of goals in my life and career—some I’ve hit, some I’ve missed, and others quietly faded into the background. But I’ve learned something simple that makes all the difference: accountability.

Whether it’s hiring a new assistant, revamping a website, or even getting up at 5:00 a.m. to run, it’s easier to show up when someone’s waiting on you. We’ve all had those moments—the alarm goes off early, it’s dark, the bed is warm, and no one would know if we hit snooze. But if you know your running partner is already lacing up outside, that’s a different story.

The same principle applies to business. In my mastermind group, we set quarterly goals and check in six weeks later—not just to talk about them, but to report on progress. That accountability session might seem simple, but it’s powerful. Knowing that someone else is going to ask, “How’s that going?” pushes you to take action.

It’s easy to drift when no one’s watching. But with the right people in your corner—whether a coach, colleague, or peer—you’re more likely to stay on track and keep moving forward.

If you’re setting goals but not seeing progress, ask yourself: do I have an accountability partner? If not, it might be time to find one. That simple shift could be exactly what you need to go from intention to achievement.
