Sharing Opinions on Social Media
Feb 22, 2026
I’ve always had a complicated relationship with social media. If it weren’t for business, I’m honestly not sure I’d be on it at all. Some weeks I barely post anything. Other weeks, I find myself sharing more than I expected. I see the good it can do—connecting people, keeping us informed, offering a space to share ideas—but I also see the dark side: comparison, division, and the constant pressure to present only the shiny parts of our lives.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the line between personal posting and professional presence. Like many business owners, I use social platforms to build relationships and establish my expertise. But what happens when personal opinions—especially on topics like politics or religion—spill into the same space where potential clients are watching?
I know colleagues who are extremely outspoken online. Some share their political views daily; others post boldly about their religious beliefs. I respect them, genuinely. Their conviction is admirable. And I also understand the importance of speaking up—if we never share our perspective, we leave the narrative entirely to others.
But here’s the truth I keep coming back to: everything we post has consequences. When clients or partners follow us beyond the business page, personal content becomes part of the professional equation. A single strongly worded post can unintentionally close doors.
I’m not suggesting anyone silence their beliefs. I’m simply reminding myself—and anyone else who straddles the business-personal line—that authenticity sometimes comes with a cost. And before we hit “post,” it’s worth asking: am I willing to pay it?
