My Experience With Transcendental Meditation

I’ve tried to get into meditation several times in my life, and honestly, I failed just as many times. I’d sit quietly, try to focus on my breath, and within seconds my brain would be running a marathon of unrelated thoughts. I chalked it up to a busy mind or maybe even some undiagnosed adult ADHD. Either way, I gave up—again and again.

Then I found Transcendental Meditation. And this one stuck.

It’s been a few years now since I started practicing TM, and while I’m not perfect in my routine, I keep coming back because it works. I am not super consistent, but it’s become part of my morning rhythm, a reset button before the chaos of work begins.

What makes TM different for me is the use of a mantra. Instead of forcing myself to clear my mind, I gently return to that mantra when my thoughts wander (which they often do). That simple shift—giving my brain something to lightly hold on to—has made all the difference. I can actually settle in now. I don’t beat myself up for drifting. I just refocus.

I won’t pretend I’ve mastered it. I’ll just say this: when life has thrown some serious challenges my way, this practice has helped me stay grounded and present. That alone is reason enough for me to keep going.
