How Losing Weight Applies To Running a Business

I've been on a personal journey this past year to lose some weight—about 30 pounds so far. I still have more to go, but I've found something surprising along the way: losing weight has a lot in common with running a successful business.

The core of my weight loss strategy? It’s not some new fad or intense workout program. It’s simply tracking what I eat and making sure I consume fewer calories than I expend. That’s it. I know how many calories I burn in a typical day, and I make sure my intake stays below that. Over time, the results follow.

That same principle applies to business. You have to know your numbers. You need to know how much you’re bringing in and how much you’re spending. Your profit and loss statement isn’t just a formality—it’s the heartbeat of your business. If your expenses outweigh your income, you’re headed into dangerous territory.

It’s amazing how many parallels there are. Just like I sometimes slip up with eating—Thanksgiving wasn’t kind to me—it’s easy to lose discipline in business too. Spending creeps up, income drops, and suddenly you’re wondering what happened.

The fix? Awareness. Tracking. Discipline. Whether it's calories or dollars, what gets measured gets managed.

Want to lose weight? Know your intake and output.
Want to succeed in business? Know your revenue and expenses.

It’s not sexy, but it works.
