Do You Own a Business…Or a Job?
Sep 21, 2025
For years, I proudly told people I owned an appraisal business. But when I really stepped back and looked at it honestly, what I actually owned was a job—with all the responsibilities and stress, but none of the freedom that true business ownership brings.
There’s a critical difference between owning your job and owning a business. That difference lies in this: can you walk away for two weeks, completely unplug, and come back to a business that’s still running smoothly? If the answer is no—if your presence is required for every piece of the puzzle—you don’t own a business. You own your job.
That realization was a game-changer for me. It forced me to shift my thinking and build systems, processes, and a team that could operate without me. It wasn’t easy. It meant letting go of some control, investing in support, and learning to trust others. But the payoff? Freedom. Flexibility. And yes, a business that’s actually worth something to someone else.
So here’s the question I challenge you to ask yourself: If you disappeared for two weeks, would your business survive? If not, it might be time to rethink how you're operating. You don’t have to settle for owning a job. With intention and effort, you can build a business that runs—and even grows—without you.
