Avoiding “Oops, I Forgot!”
Sep 14, 2025
Sometimes, the simplest ideas can make the biggest difference. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about one word: capture.
It all started with a frustrating conversation I had with my son. He’d left a huge fuel tank on my driveway for over a month—something I had specifically asked him to move after 30 days. When I confronted him about it, his response was, “Oh yeah, I forgot.” It’s hard to forget something you walk past every day, but that’s exactly what happened. Why? Because he didn’t capture the commitment.
We’ve all been there—overwhelmed, juggling a million things, and unintentionally letting something slip through the cracks. But the difference between letting things slide and actually following through comes down to one thing: having a system to capture your commitments.
Whether it’s a sticky note, an app, an email to yourself, or a reminder on your phone, it doesn’t matter how you do it—just that you do it. Personally, I use my email inbox as my main container. If someone asks me to do something, I immediately send myself a quick message and snooze it for a day when I know I can take action. It’s a small habit, but it’s saved me from countless “Oops, I forgot” moments.
If you want to be known as someone who gets things done, someone who follows through, someone others can count on—start by capturing the idea. It’s the first step toward integrity, reliability, and success.
So today’s challenge? Find your method. Capture your commitments. And make sure nothing important slips through the cracks.
