Take Advantage of OINII!
Jul 24, 2025
In the fast-paced world of running a business, it's easy to get lost in the day-to-day grind. We are technicians at heart, but often struggle as business owners. A key principle that has dramatically shifted my approach is something I've coined "on it, not in it." This concept, derived from the timeless wisdom in The E-Myth, emphasizes the importance of working on your business rather than getting bogged down in the daily tasks that keep it running.
For me, this practice has been transformative. Every Monday morning, without fail, I set aside dedicated time—usually around 7 AM—to step back and focus on the bigger picture. I don’t schedule client meetings or appraisals. Instead, I spend this time to reflect, plan, and strategize. Whether it's refining marketing strategies, optimizing operations, or brainstorming new business ideas, this time helps me maintain perspective and keeps my ventures moving forward.
The difference between working "on" and "in" the business is huge. The other day, I spent a full day at one of my cabins, away from the usual distractions. I intentionally turned off my phone and focused on improving my businesses—not just in the technical sense but in a broader, strategic way. And guess what? I walked away with at least one valuable idea for each of my companies—ideas that will undoubtedly help me grow and generate more revenue.
The lesson here is clear: don’t underestimate the power of pausing to think. Sometimes, the best way to move forward is by taking a step back. Try it for yourself—schedule "on it, not in it" time and see how it changes the game for your business!
