The “Why” Behind Growth
May 24, 2026
I was reminded recently how easy it is to say we have a vision for our business, and how rare it is to actually sit down and fully develop it. In a coaching session, I was working with someone who thought he knew exactly where he was headed. Like many people, he had a general sense of his goals, but when we started digging deeper, it became clear that his vision hadn’t been fully formed. So I gave him a simple but challenging assignment: write out what he wanted his life and business to look like a few years down the road, not just in terms of revenue, but in terms of meaning.
When we met again, the conversation shifted in a powerful way. We talked less about numbers and growth strategies and more about the “why” behind the goals. Why build a larger business? Why pursue growth at all? His answers had nothing to do with ego or bragging rights. They were rooted in family, service, community, faith, generosity, and the freedom to be present for the people who matter most. It was a bigger, more meaningful vision than simply hitting a financial milestone.
That conversation hit home for me as well. There are seasons in life where growing a business aggressively makes sense, and seasons where it doesn’t. Right now, I’m far more interested in balance than scale. I want time for relationships, for quiet evenings, and for moments that don’t show up on a balance sheet. Recently, that looked like standing in the yard with my son, shooting bows as the sun went down, talking, laughing, and learning together.
It was a good reminder that business is a tool, not the destination. If you ever feel stuck or unmotivated, it might not be a strategy problem at all. It might be time to revisit your vision and reconnect with the deeper reason you started in the first place.
