Sustainable Growth: How Moderation Can Transform Your Health and Your Business

The Myth of the Extreme Overhaul

I’ve struggled with my weight for years, going through the endless cycle of yo-yo diets. In the past, whenever I decided to make a change, I’d go completely overboard. I’d drastically cut my calories down to extreme levels and force myself into grueling two-hour gym routines. Sure, I’d stick with it for three or four weeks, but eventual burnout, stress, or boredom would inevitably cause me to crash right back into old habits.

Recently, I decided to try something completely different: moderation. Instead of a massive calorie deficit, I made a modest tweak, focused heavily on increasing my daily protein, and swapped hours at the gym for quick, 12-minute resistance band sessions right at home. It’s consistent, manageable, and easy to fit into my schedule. And because it isn't an overwhelming burden, it’s actually sustainable long-term.

Applying Micro-Changes to Your Business

The exact same principle applies directly to how you run your appraisal practice. So many appraisers try to overhaul their entire business overnight. They tell themselves they need to spend three straight hours making cold calls for non-lender work, or completely rebuild every single administrative system in one weekend. Unsurprisingly, they get overwhelmed, burn out, and abandon the effort altogether.

Real, lasting progress doesn't come from massive, exhausting pushes; it comes from small, moderate actions taken consistently. Don't try to make fifty cold calls today—commit to making just one. Don't try to overhaul your entire office workflow at once—focus on tweaking one minor bottleneck today and another one tomorrow.

When you set reasonable, incremental goals, you eliminate friction and build momentum. Stop looking for instant, radical overhauls. Embrace moderation, make small daily adjustments, and watch how those tiny steps compound into massive, long-term success for both your life and your business.
