Replace Yourself!

For years, I believed being a skilled technician naturally meant I’d be great at running a business. After all, I had mastered my craft — why wouldn’t I succeed as a business owner too? But that thinking was flawed. What I’ve learned is this: being a great technician and being a great business owner are two completely different skill sets.

One of the biggest shifts in my mindset came from reading The E-Myth for Attorneys. Now, before you tune out because you’re not a lawyer — hear me out. Replace “attorney” with your profession (in my case, “appraiser”), and it’s like the book was written for you.

Here’s the principle that hit me the hardest: you must replace yourself if you ever want your business to be valuable. If your business can’t run without you, you don’t really own a business — you own a job. That line shook me.

The book also introduced the idea of an “entrepreneurial seizure” — that moment when a technician suddenly decides, “I can do this on my own!” But without systems, delegation, and true business leadership, most crash and burn. I almost did.

Reading this book (well, listening to it on Audible) changed everything. I now am constantly working on the process of stepping out of the technician role and into the CEO seat. It’s not easy, but it’s liberating.

If you want your business to thrive — not just survive — invest in learning how to lead it. Start by replacing yourself.
