Part-Time Appraisers Are Professionals
Nov 02, 2025
The other day, I fell into the all-too-familiar trap of reading a heated debate on social media. Someone boldly claimed that if you're not a full-time appraiser, you're not a professional. I laughed, then sighed, and—like an idiot—engaged.
Here’s the thing: professionalism isn’t measured in hours. It’s defined by how you approach your work—your ethics, your expertise, and your commitment to doing the job right. Whether you appraise 10 homes a week or 2 homes a month, you can still maintain high standards, use the right tools, provide solid support for your adjustments, and treat your clients with respect.
I know plenty of incredible appraisers who’ve intentionally scaled back—some to raise kids, others to pursue new ventures, or simply to create better work-life balance. That doesn’t make them any less professional than someone grinding 60-hour weeks.
Heck, by this ridiculous logic, I’m not a professional either. I currently appraise part-time while focusing on coaching and other business ventures. So I guess I’ve been “demoted” from professional status? Not buying it.
In a market that’s been challenging for many, I’ve seen countless appraisers adapt, pivot, and diversify. That’s not unprofessional—it’s smart. And it’s survival. If you're doing honest, competent work, staying compliant, and serving your clients well, you're a professional. End of story. Let the internet trolls scream into the void. Meanwhile, I’ll be over here, working smarter—not necessarily more.
